Foucault maintains that madness stems from the alienated hollow life we live. Madness is in all of us, those who lead their lives on the fringes of society or at the heart of it. Gradually, the individual no longer knows when he is asleep and when he is awake. The trauma is a disease of the consciousness and in the total trauma there is only observation without a point of reference, without an observer, with no body to hold on to.
